On set in Hoboken, NJ, with the crew of OVER/UNDER, April 2018
Theresa Gambacorta is a creator, writer, actor and producer. She has appeared in film, television and theatre and is the creator and performer of four solo plays including La Magnani, about the life of Italian actress Anna Magnani, which ran Off Broadway at The Arclight Theatre and was directed by her mentor, the late, beloved actress and teacher Elizabeth Kemp. Other solo plays that showcase her depth of humor and pathos include the autobiographical pieces, Breaking The Glass, Baby Fat and The Vegas Project.
The roots of her current series, Over/Under began with her solo play The Vegas Project — a father/daughter story of loss and reckoning set against the backdrop of a Las Vegas-inspired ritual of mourning. Playing to sold-out audiences, The Vegas Project left people moved and in love with a work that was at it’s core heartbreaking and hilarious. Following the birth of her son, Levi in 2012, Gambacorta put her writing on hold to give her best creative energy to motherhood. In the quiet hour or two of toddlerhood’s long naps, The Vegas Project was eventually rendered into a full-length screenplay. But long naps turn to short naps that give way to no naps and soon, the story of a woman’s loss of identity, borne from Gambacorta’s own inner rumblings as a woman torn between her fervent love for creating story and her ardent love of motherhood began to fuel the shape of her next piece, Over/Under.
As Gambacorta began to question the impact that the death of her father had on her vision of herself as a mother, Over/Under organically morphed with her earlier writing of The Vegas Project. In fall 2017, Gambacorta and producer + director, Natalie Johnson successfully crowdfunded through the filmmaker’s platform Seed and Spark to shoot the pilot episode of Over/Under with a cast of television and Broadway veterans.
Over/Under was shot on location in Hoboken, New Jersey and at The Skyline Hotel in New York City in April, 2018. Over/Under is Theresa Gambacorta’s first film. In addition to writing for stage, film and TV, Gambacorta is the writer of the upcoming cookbook, Big Love Cooking with Little Owl Restaurant owner + chef Joey Campanaro due out in 2020 from Chronicle Books. She holds an MA in Educational Theatre from NYU and is a teaching artist with Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken, N.J.
